Nine Red Moons brings together musicians from Sepultura and Viper on ‘Archetypes’

The single preceding the EP Sumerian Songs for the Dead combines classic metal, prog metal, and themes inspired by Carl Jung’s archetypes.

Sepultura and Viper come together on a single recording for “Archetypes,” the new single from Nine Red Moons that heralds Sumerian Songs for the Dead, a debut EP scheduled for September. The track brings together bassist Paulo Xisto (Sepultura) and guitarist Felipe Machado (Viper) alongside the project’s mastermind, Eduardo Simões (guitar), and an international lineup featuring Tasos Lazaris (vocals), Victor Simões (keyboards), Polina Kermesh Faustova (cello), and Angelo Spilotros (drums). “This is the first time musicians associated with Sepultura and Viper have participated in the same recording together,” notes guitarist Eduardo “Paulista” Simões—the Nine Red Moons mastermind, former member of Chakal and Pit Passarell, and the composer of all the project’s music and lyrics.

Musically, “Archetypes” takes Iron Maiden as its primary reference, particularly regarding Lazaris’s vocal delivery, which is reminiscent of Bruce Dickinson’s style. The track also incorporates influences from Metallica and Black Sabbath—specifically the era featuring Ronnie James Dio on vocals. Angelo Spilotros’s drumming introduces progressive metal elements, including a 7/8 time signature section prior to the solo, as Simões explains. The track’s heaviness is further bolstered by Paulo Xisto on bass; his instrument plays a central role in the sound, contributing to the composition’s density and depth. Guitar solos are performed by Eduardo Simões and Felipe Machado, while Victor Simões handles the keyboards. The lineup is rounded out by Ukrainian cellist Polina Kermesh Faustova—a member of Hans Zimmer’s orchestra—and Spilotros on drums.

The visual aspect aligns with the single’s conceptual approach, featuring cover art created by Jean Michel of DSNS Art. Eduardo Simões handled production, with co-production by Val Santos and Alan Wallace. Val Santos was also responsible for mixing and mastering, while the lyric video was produced by Wanderley Perna.
